Building Legacy Structures from Living Wood

We craft custom frames, structures and artisanal creations using hand cut joinery and other skill-based techniques sourced from trees harvested locally and sustainably. Our products create structures and timber installations that honor the forest.

Frames Born from the Forest

Each project begins with a walk through the woods. We don't just build with timber. We see the structure already living inside the tree.

How We Work

1

Walk the Woods

Every frame starts in the forest. We identify standing dead trees that have already given their best years or assess the appropriate living species to accommodate the project. The locally harvested wood is then transported to our mill site, either at Hall Tavern Farm in Charlemont, MA or the job site where we can transport our portable Woodmizer. After milling, the cutting of the frame begins.

2

Cut by Hand

No computer does this work. Each mortise and tenon is shaped by hand with chisels and slicks. The joinery locks together without metal fasteners. It's the way frames were built for a thousand years, and it's the way they'll stand for a thousand more.

3

Raise Together

A frame raising is a shared moment. We have had friends, family, and neighbors gathered together to observe and toast the process of a completed frame being erected. When the last peg completes the new, standing frame, you know something has been built that will outlive you.
